I hadn't heard of this book until recently - I hadn't realised Daphne du Maurier had written anything other than Rebecca! I know see she's written quite a few other books - more to add to my TBR. This one started off slowly, but picked up as I read further. It was less powerful than Rebecca, but a good story nonetheless.

I have read several books by this author and i love the way she writes. In this instance I have listened to the Audio which is superbly narrated adding to the storyline. Essentially i see it as a book of deceit, subterfuge and counter-fuge (OK i know that is not a word). The romance is a little one sided in all cases. I think DU Maurier puffs real life into her characterisation and i can picture both Rachel and Philip although i don't ever remember seeing it on TV or film. Its definitely a 4 sta

What a chilly opening for a book -- a child's guardian encouraging him to poke a murderer's 4-week old hanging corpse with a stick -- but it sets up a taut sense of foreboding for the rest of the book. Du Maurier draws us into a twilight-zone world where personal desires and obsessions can lead to very dark places. It's a good read.

Du Maurier never fails to impress me. I loved this book. The suspense and atmosphere throughout had me tormented to know the truth. The writing was so descriptive and the dialogue sharp and believable.
