This was a lot of fun. Great story and art, witty conversations. Superpowers aside, Kamala is a real teenager with real problems. She is a Muslim girl growing up in New Jersey, butting heads with her parents, trying to figure out how to balance loyalty to her parents and her heritage with wanting to be true to herself. I loved it.
I think I have a new favorite superhero. Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal is the first graphic novel about a new superhero. Although, there has been a Ms. Marvel before, Kamala is a new person picking up the mantle. What makes her interesting to me is she is a high school student in Jersey City, NJ who happens to be muslim. Because she is a teenager, she shares a lot of the traits that I enjoy about early Spiderman. She is optimistic and hopeful and really wants do good things with her power, but s

Disclaimer: I am not a super-hero comics reader. In fact, this is the first one I've read in my entire life. So I guess it isn't surprising that I was much more interested in the panels that dealt with Kamala's relationships with her family, friends, and religious community than I was in the hero/action type panels. Overall I was really impressed, though I don't know if I'll keep reading -- I don't think it was enough to change me into someone who really wants to read about super heroes.

I was expecting to love this but it just didn't wow me. I don't like the art style that much. It was realistic up close but then far away it gets weird to me. Also some characters are caricature like, which feels out of place if you are going for a more realistic style. Some of the action scenes were downright confusing to me. Since she can shrink and be large, there needs to be something in the scene that gives perspective to tell you which she is. The mist thing is another thing. Why did she g

When I was reading this graphic novel, I was really annoyed and even angry with it. It took me a day to figure out why I almost hated a book that a lot of people seem to like. I was fine with the superhero part of this novel. What I had a real problem was the way a minority American race and culture was dealt with in this novel. It wasn't authentic or realistic. Yes, that is ironic since I'm fine with a flying superhero. A brown teenager who rebels against her parents doesn't automatically mean

3.5 stars can we say yay for diversity? I'm getting really into super heroes at least through tv shows and movies. I wanted to read the graphic novels they are based on. I don't know as much about marvel characters as I do DC so I thought I'd try with Ms. Marvel. I'm glad I did. I'm looking forward to the next issue.

I enjoyed the book and the diversity of the alter ego for Me Marvel. I had trouble with the flow of the story. Additionally I couldn't understand where she suddenly got her super power from.
