Just as I was thinking it was time to put my book down and go to sleep, this book grabbed a hold of me and wouldn't let me go until I finished it.
And it broke me. Now it is almost midnight and I am so tired but I can't sleep because now I am thinking about this book and the people in it. No spoilers but I had to just come here and review it, so maybe I can now get to sleep. ...more

Much to my Book Club's disagreement, I find this the worst book I've read this year. Too simple, too much telling and not enough showing. Its redeeming quality was the Author's Note at the end where Hoover draws some parallels between the story and her actual childhood. Interesting plot, but poorly written. Give me a good romance with substance to it for some mindless Pandemic reading, but this one wasn't it.

I'm actually very conflicted about this book.
On the one hand, I definitely see the value in encouraging open dialogue about domestic abuse, and trying to show an inside look at just how damaging and difficult it can be.
On the other hand, I really disliked just about everything about the plot, the characters (even the ones that are supposed to be likable), and the end result.
Overall, very conflicted and quite disappointed. ...more

A pretty quick and engaging read--didn't blow my mind, but I did stay up late to finish which is always the mark of a successful book.
