An excellent, thought-provoking and kind of scary read for those of us in the senior category. The scary part was the description of how aging impacts us. Gawande looks at end of life medicine and care. The history was very interesting. I had not realized that the reason my grandmothers ended up in nursing homes is because in the 60s and 70s there wasn't much in the way of other options when their care overwhelmed family resources. Loved this and then recommended it to my husband who thought it was one of the best books he read in the year. I appreciated this also because of my background in public health and looking at what to do for the aging is valuable and having a discussion about personal preferences is even more valuable. Recommend!
A book about dying, on one's own terms. About the ways the medical profession has failed those who face terminal illness, and the ways some medical folks have begun to change that. An important book about an important subject!
