This book is to be read slowly to really ponder over the thought provoking remarks mentioned throughout the book. As the main character Dorian says, "I don't say I like the book, I say it is an engrossing book" This book affects a reader one way or the other...

Despite knowing the story, I don't think that I have ever actually read the full book before. It is a real character study of Dorian Gray. He starts young, fresh, innocent and with a beautiful face that knows no sin or cruelty. Then he meets Lord Henry while sitting for his portrait. This is classified as a horror and while it has no real body horror or jump scares, I would classify this as one of the earliest psychological horrors. I felt sorry for Dorian up to a certain part, but then I could see his descent into madness or evilness, or whatever you want to call it. He was certainly a weak person seemingly in both mind and body. I thought the "devil" had to be Lord Henry. He was experimenting with Dorian! Incredible. Incredibly horrible! Surprisingly quick read. Seemed somehow to resonate with what I'm studying these days, though I'm not quite sure how. I must admit that I find the dialogue of Lord Henry Wotton a bit pseudo-filosofic, and not incredibly deep. Phenomenally well written, though. The sympathy of the ruined people in Mr. Grey's wake doesn't really strike you, as you never really knew them before.
