Phew - what a ride! I could not put this book down and, although granted I am slightly emotional right at the moment, after literally holding my breath for pages and pages, I actually had tears in my eyes at the very end. In this book, Gamache who, by the end of the previous book looked like he had been beaten by Francoeur, had lost his partner, Jean-Guy Beauvoir and was heading for disaster, finally uncovers a conspiracy which has been building for about the last 5 or 6 books in the series. A completely satisfying completion to the many subplots included in all nine of the Inspector Gamache mysteries. For me, the writing seems to get better and better. If I were advising someone who hadn't read this series where to start, I would say with the first book and read consecutively to this one at the end. It does seem to be the several segments of one work....

Oh, dear. I spent part of the time reading this book fearing that the author was setting the series up to end! And, it does appear so...even in the end of the book. Still the series has 8-9 books to go and is named for the Chief Inspector, so it can't be so!
This story is centered around the corruption at the Sûreté as well as the murder of the last of the famous five quints, which had its own corruption swirling through the backstory.

Loved this book! Louise Penny has outdone herself! My only regret is that I read it too quickly - now I am done.
