Dee Brown's poignant narrative is well researched, with an excellent bibliography of the author's sources. It is also well illustrated, with photos or paintings of the various leaders of the native American tribes of the time. This was a devastating read - it was such a difficult book to get through simply because it was so horrific, tragic and unbelievably callous. How does one sum up the systematic genocide of the Native American Indians in the nineteenth century? Whilst they fought for survival, the white settlers killed mainly for greed and the desire for personal gain, but also because of their unerring belief in their own superiority.
