I am so glad that this book was nominated for the Classics group at Constant Reader. I knew the story, having enjoyed both film versions, but I had never settled in with the novel that begat them. Light social satire in which four Englishwomen, strangers to each other, plot to escape the ennui of dreary interwar England by renting an Italian castle for a month. The book has little to do with Italy, and everything to do with the inner landscape of femininity. We as readers know the inner thoughts of each main character so we can enjoy the subtleties of each relationship and situation as their idyllic holiday unfolds.

A charming book written in 1922 about 4 women, strangers to each other, who rent a castle on the Italian Riviera for the month of April. The descriptions of the gardens and the internal monologues of the four women are incredible.

Charming, sweet, funny, and the exquisite descriptions of the Italian landscape made me feel like I was on vacation. I’m a longtime fan of the movie that came out in the 90s but as usual, “the book was better.” So glad I finally read it.
