What Members Thought
Something about the tone of this book just didn't sit quite right with me. I felt like the author wanted to have it both ways: on the one hand, a blasé and flippant indictment of a certain class of Seattlites, on the other, a serious account of mental illness and complicated family dynamics. I suspect that for some readers that dichotomy really worked, that it kept the book light but not frivolous and insured that you see every character as simultaneously sympathetic and ridiculous.
