When someone suggested this book for our book group we virtually all gave a collective groan. I did not want to read this immensely popular kid's book about a young wizard. But all I can say is ... WOW! Our entire book club LOVED it! I was hooked and read all four of the (then) existing books. Well-written. Good vocabulary. A "moral" story. There are universal themes here and the writing moves the story along quickly.

OK, so I like these stories written for children. I am really susceptible to curling up on the couch with a good story for fun! It takes me back to good times as a child. Or perhaps I never got enough of good stories.
This is written clearly for children, but there is enough intrigue and character development to entertain an adult. This is a simple story of a young orphan who finds out that he has wizard parentage and goes off to wizard school. This is his first year at the boarding school and th ...more

Took forever to get through reading this out loud to the kids. I would have thought being stuck at home with them would have made it easier, but we were so out of any type of normal routine that we barely read at all. And, Melanie and I have read this so many times we were not in a rush to find out what would happen, and Natalie was still not too interested. Partly because she is just not that in to fantasy stuff and partly because she heard the audio book before and has seen ...more

When I was reading this book for myself, it was a fun read. On rereading it with my 7 year old, I was less impressed with the stereotypes and chosen dialogue of the book. Of course, he enjoyed it, so maybe that's the better review. Of course, "shut up" has now entered his vocabulary as well (though we talked about how it would be better to us different words, depending on the circumstances and to whom one is speaking).

I just finished the illustrated edition and it was charming and lovely and amazing. I loved that the text wasn't abridged and I loved all the beautiful artwork throughout the book - from the full page spreads to the border sketches to the gorgeous character portraits. A wonderful way to re-read an old favorite!
