A very charming story. Simon is a great character, entertaining and quite believable. His e-mail flirtations with Blue ring true as a first serious high school romance. I loved this book. I originally gave it 4 stars but after thinking about it I realized that it deserved 5 stars. This is the story of Simon who is gay but has not come out yet, not because he is afraid but because he does not want it to become a big deal. This was a very charming story of a teenage boy coming out. The author did a very good job capturing the angst of finding yourself/being yourself as well as the added complexity that coming out brings to the mix.

Overall I found this book quite boring. I was never entertained and it made reading a chore. The book did not read authentic at all, not for the situation(s) or for the characters. The voice of the teenage boy did not come across as authentic to me, although he was quite annoying and meant to be funny when he was not...so maybe some teenage boys I suppose. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. OH MY GOD. I stayed up until like 2am reading this book. I swear to the Lord, how have I never read this? Why did it take me this long? It's not like I hadn't heard from other people about how amazing it is.
I have to tell you, when I was going to bed last night, a thought stuck me "Blue is totally Bram. Has to be. Abraham." It seemed...too convenient that it was Cal and there was no way it could be Martin. No way. It didn't make sense. Couldn't be Nick, he clearly was enamored with Abby. BUT TH OH MY GOD. I stayed up until like 2am reading this book. I swear to the Lord, how have I never read this? Why did it take me this long? It's not like I hadn't heard from other people about how amazing it is.
I have to tell you, when I was going to bed last night, a thought stuck me "Blue is totally Bram. Has to be. Abraham." BUT THEN BRAM WAS MENTIONED EVERY NOW AND THEN, IT HAD TO BE. For a hot second, I panicked and thought maybe Leah or something was pretending to be a guy via Blue cause she had a thing for Simon and then I thought ....no, no, no, Leah wouldn't do anything like that. And then when Nora and Leah were together, I thought OMG I wonder if Nora and Leah are dating? Why did I think that? I mean, I guess Leah could be bi but she seemed too into Nick.

Okay, anyway, I'm rambling. Here are my scattered thoughts:

Abby- I honestly got mad when SHE got mad about Simon and the blackmail. I guess maybe because she's straight, she didn't get how terrifying being outed was. On the other hand, I get that she doesn't want her love life meddled with, but at what point did Simon EVER tell Abby "Date Martin or else..."

Martin- Glad he apologized in the end, but I don't necessarily think he deserves to be forgiven just yet (funny coming from me, because I forgive people all the time for doing dumb things). In what universe did he think that what he did would be OK? I don't care if he "didn't think it through" because he was "too obsessed with Abby." Ugh. Get over yourself.

Leah- Sooo frustrating. Mostly because I just wanted her to give Simon a chance to talk. I definitely understand where her anger was coming from, as I would have been angry too, but it's so annoying when you try to apologize to someone BUT THEY JUST DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT, because obviously no excuse will ever warrant forgiveness.

Bram- Sttttooop being adorable. I almost don't want to see the movie that's being made of this because I don't want my image of the characters to be ruined by actors/actresses who don't fit into my mold (although, admittedly, I have looked up the imdb page and recognize most of the actors/actresses....and they are all great).

Anyway, GOD THIS BOOK WAS GOOD. I've been reading manga for the longest time and was dying to read a novel again. I'm glad I started again with this one. ...more
