My thanks to Poisoned Pen Press for a review copy of this book via NetGalley.

Taking us into the rather ruthless world of book collectors, runners, sellers and prized first editions, Death of a Bookseller by Bernard J. Farmer, first published in 1956 is being republished as a British Library Crime Classic, after decades of being out of print. The author Bernard J. Farmer (1902-1964), as Martin Edwards points out in his introduction, was a most fascinating person, who held a succession of interest

Published in 1956 this - long out of print mystery - was part of a series featuring Sergeant Jack Wigan, who first appeared in the 1953 book, 'Death at the Cascades.' 'Death of a Bookseller,' was choosen to be the 100th British Library Crime Classic as it is much sought after. Although this was not quite a four or five star read for me, I am grateful that so many Golden Age classics are being reprinted and that I had the opportunity to read it.

Sergeant Wigan is returning home when he comes acro

3.5 stars I enjoyed seeing diligent Sgt. Wigan going up against literal cutthroat bookdealers. I subtracted half a star for silly (non-fair play) ending where the murderer confesses without any evidence against them.

There's a note from the publisher in the British Library Crime Classic books about how these tales were written in a different time, with different standards and language. "Death of a Bookseller" by Bernard Farmer is less problematic than some, but it was not kind in how it treated most of its few female characters. One is a sometimes violent, besotted mistress of a man who uses her. She knows this, but keeps acquiring the books he wants to prove her worth to him. Another is a woman who was abus ...more

This was an odd book, published by the British Library Crime Classics, centred on the bookseller trade and all the skulduggery behind it in the 1950's. Sergeant Wigan of the Metropolitan Police Force befriends a book dealer and becomes interested in the trade, only to be drawn into the investigation when the book dealer is killed in his own library. A peculiar cast of characters, shady book dealings and even shadier businesses, a possibly innocent man about to be hanged, and some atmospheric sce ...more

An excellent example of Golden Age mystery, a puzzle and a thoroughly enjoyable story.
I love Sergeant Wigan and love the story set in a bookshop that sells rare books.
There's a an interesting portrait of a bookselling, an intriguing investigation and a puzzle that I didn't solve even if I try to follow the clues.
It's the first book I read by Bernard Farmer and will check if there's other books.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine

Moderate enjoyment - it dragged a lot at the end. The bookish theme was the part I liked the best.

I did like Sgt. Wigan a lot.
