I have been reading Georgette Heyer's mysteries and enjoying them, but I was a bit concerned at the reviews of this one. Perhaps as I wasn't expecting too much, I found I enjoyed this more than I had thought I would, although I did correctly guess the killer which is unusual for me.

Some critics call this Heyer's best mystery, but to me it is about the worst, primarily because of the Bible-quoting policeman.

This was a weaker book in the series. A wealthy ladies' man has his head bashed in in his home, and the number of people who had visited him or had an opportunity to do so keeps growing, despite the very short time frame in which the killing could have happened. The "witty" dialogue in this one is less successful and the solution becomes clear rather earlier than usual for those who've read a lot of mysteries. Not one of Heyer's best.

I wasn't keen on the first book in this series, but liked the next 5 books, however this book was a disappointment. I know Heyer thought all families were dysfunctional and this family also had some strange characters, but the policeman who continually quoted the bible, beat them hands down. The mystery of the murderer, was not a mystery pretty early on in the book.
