What Members Thought

2022 - still 5 stars, I very much enjoyed my reread, this time accompanied by the sparkling, perfect audiobook narration of Jane Entwistle - she truly captures the humor and youthful energy of Flavia. It’s been a pleasure reminding myself of the intricacies of the rather bizarre de Luce family relationships. I read these books so quickly when first published, because they were such an entertaining treat, that I missed the more subtle bits.

The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches is the 6th book in the Flavia de Luce series. Flavia is a lively and brilliant 11-year-old living with her father and sisters in a small village in England in the 1950s. In this book, Flavia is waiting at the train station when a stranger whispers something in her ear. Not long after, the stranger is pushed under the train and Flavia must figure out why he was murdered and what he has to do with the de Luce family.

I haven't loved each and every Flavia de Luce book equally. I definitely enjoy Flavia as a character and narrator even though I can't always relate to her all the time. In this sixth mystery, Flavia's focus is NOT on a current murder mystery. Far from it, even though a murder occurs practically in front of her (at the train station), she can't really be bothered. Why? Well, her mother is coming home...at last. For Flavia, the one de Luce child who CANNOT remember her mother at all, this is just

It's definitely not my favorite Flavia novels. I've come to realize that, by nature, I'm much more down with the episodic than I am with the season or series long arc. It's not that I don't appreciate the long game, but more often than not I find it a bit boring. And this volume is all long game and not a lot of immediate plot. So - a bit boring for me. Some nice relationship bits and it does what it's supposed to - ends strong and makes me keen on the next one.

Another 5-star book in the Flavia DeLuce story! Oh, she is so entertaining! I was glad to have the loose ends of her mother's disappearance tied up. I anxiously await the next adventure, Mr. Bradley!

I bought the audiobook version, and as always, think that Jane Entwhistle, the narrator, is a great asset to the storytelling and the voice of Flavia. I am an enthusiastic Flavia fan. However, even Ms. Entwhistle' s delightful vocal skills cannot save this edition of the series. This book's purpose seems to be explaining the various reasons for characters/backgrounds/beaviours of the de Luce family members portrayed in previous books -- so very tightly tying up "loose ends" that the anima is stu
