This short standalone crime novel is beautifully written and hard to put down (I read most of it in one sitting), making me want to read more by Nicholas Blake (the pen name of poet Cecil Day-Lewis. This is not a whodunit but a tale of two strangers who agree to swap murders - a plot which Patricia Highsmith had already used a few years earlier in Strangers on a Train.

Having read all the Nigel Strangeways mysteries, I was keen to read Nicholas Blake's (pen name for Cecil Day-Lewis) stand alone crime novels.
This is something of an unoriginal plot. Stuart Hammer, keen to bump off his uncle, pay off his debts and inherit his company, joins forces with Ned Stowe, equally desirous of ridding himself of his wife Helena, in order to marry his mistress, Laura, who has become tired of waiting for him.
