Sheila Webb is sent to an address to take some shorthand dictation. She works for a secretarial agency. When she gets there she finds an empty house and a dead body. She runs out of the house and straight into the arms of Colin Lamb - a friend of DI Hardcastle - who will be investigating the case.

This is another book where Poirot isn't involved until the later part. Instead we have Inspector Hardcastle, and his friend Colin Lamb. Lamb is also a friend of Poirot, and it is he, who involves Poirot in the mystery as a challenge. I did guess one of the mysteries here quite early on, as I thought it was pretty obvious, but a second theme was something of a surprise. Unnecessarily convoluted, with an implausible romance thrown in for good measure.

Poirot really seems to be enjoying himself in this one!

I really enjoyed listening to this with its many amusing and interesting vignettes, excellent characters, and Poirot bragging he can solve the mystery without leaving home. However the ending was unrealistic and disappointing with way too many coincidences.
