In this, the thirty-third Poirot mystery, Poirot receives a request for help from mystery-writer Ariadne Oliver. Mrs Oliver has been down at Nasse House, Nassecombe, Devon, where a village fête is to be held and one attraction is a ‘murder hunt’ on the lines of a treasure hunt which she is in charge of organising. (Poirot is to be present in the guise of giving out the prizes.) While the plans are going along well, Mrs Oliver is certain that she senses something wrong, perhaps that someone has b

This was a very well-done mystery. When Poirot gets a sudden call from Ariadne Oliver asking him to come down to a country house where she 'feels' something is wrong. She is assisting with a murder hunt game and invites Poirot over on the pretext of helping her out, but actually to find out what is wrong.

As I mentioned in a recent review, I have been watching the last episodes of Agatha Christie's Poirot with David Suchet. Several of the episodes (I am especially looking at you, The Labours of Hercules and The Big Four) were extraordinarily disappointing--straying far from the original material and making the stories much darker than Christie ever intended. Dead Man's Folly, however, was a more satisfying episode. And after reading the novel again for the first time since junior high school I wa

Review of the audiobook narrated by Sir David Suchet
I tend to rate books according to how much I enjoyed them, and so I’m giving this one just three stars. Two reasons. First, I never had the least notion who the murderer might be. I mean, I rarely solve Christie’s mysteries myself, but I frequently think that I have done so. Here, there were not enough clues to lead me to pick out anybody, even a wrong one. Second, while I have great respect for Poirot’s little grey cells, his solution just see ...more

This is a very entertaining mystery, set in a large estate complete with a village fete and young people popping in and out from a neighboring youth hostel. Poirot is invited to visit by the writer Ariadne Oliver, who is arranging a murder game for the fete. She's uncomfortable about events and feels that somehow she's being manipulating for nefarious ends. Despite being forewarned Poirot is unable to keep someone from being murdered and another woman from disappearing.

Clues, red herrings, and false starts abound in this one as Poirot taxes his grey cells to discover the hidden history behind the present mystery! (Bleh at my attempted rhyming pun).
And if you want a hint to solve this by yourself, the key lies in this one-liner said by the cantankerous boatman in the book - "There will always be a Foliat in Nasse"
My Rating - 3.5/5
PS - The new hardcover edition is just fantastic! ...more

Just finished rereading this one. Halfway through the book and I still couldn't figure out who the villain is. I had an idea who it was near the end but the denouement still came as a pleasant surprise. A very solid Hercule Poirot mystery.
