I really enjoyed this, read with the reading the Detectives group - I either missed it years ago, or didn’t remember it.
Superintendent Spence asks Poirot to look into a murder case - a man has already been tried and convicted and is awaiting his death sentence, but Spence just doesn’t think he did it. Poirot agrees to take on the case, and heads to the village where it occurred; the only lodging available is a ramshackle old home owned by a friendly military couple who’ve returned from India. I definitely LOVED Mrs. McGinty's Dead. I really, really, really LOVED the surprise appearance of Ariadne Oliver. But, of course, the main star of this one is Hercule Poirot. The novel starts off rather unpleasantly with Poirot thinking to himself how wonderful he is, how marvelous he is, and how much he needs someone to talk to so he can show off how wonderful he is. Each one I read becomes my new favorite. Love the cozy. I enjoy the game. I absolutely knew who done it from early on, but with these books, the ride is definitely as important as the destination.
