Somehow I had missed out on ever reading this Hercule Poirot story. This is, in effect, a cold-case mystery. Before her death in prison, her mother had written a letter to Carla, to be opened when she reached 21, which told Carla that Caroline hadn’t killed Amyas.

Carla has the odd idea that he

I just can't like this particular book. I understand why it's a favorite of so many folks, it's well written and the characters jump off the page. Unfortunately, every time I read it I wonder if I'll feel differently - and I never do. I'm left with a very distasteful feeling and am relieved when it's over.

Sixteen years earlier, Caroline Crale was tried and convicted of poisoning her husband. Caroline's young daughter is sent out of the area to live with another family and her name is changed. However, before her death, Caroline sent a letter to her daughter from prison stating she is innocent. The now adult daughter, wanting the truth, asks Poirot to investigate. Although it is sixteen years later and her mother is dead, all the others involved are still living. Poirot agrees to investigate, inte ...more

I think this is my favourite Agatha Christie. Attempting to solve a crime 16 years after the event all Poirot can do is depend on 5 very different peoples versions of events. Facts are blurred by personal opinions of thr characters involved. I loved the different angle of this one.

3.5 stars ... not one of my favorites but entertaining. I thought for sure I had it figured out but nope!

Even though the book is built around five people telling the same story over and over again, Christie's gift for bestowing each character with a unique voice ensures the story never becomes tedious. ...more
