Christie's magnificently un-festive country-house mystery features a dysfunctional family, each member more horrid than the last, gathering together for what seems guaranteed to be a hideous Christmas even before one of their number butchers the sadistic elderly patriarch with a carving knife in a locked room overlooking the well-appointed grounds.
