Poirot is at his dentist's for a checkup and attributes the strange atmosphere there to his nervousness. It was rather nice to know that the inimitable Hercule has his Achilles' heel like the rest of us mere mortals! Later in the day, the dentist shoots himself. Poirot does not believe this version and sets out to discover the truth. When a patient dies, and another goes missing, even Japp is convinced that something shady is going on.

Hercule Poirot has a dentist's appointment and he is just as uptight as everyone else is on such occasions. But even though he is stressed he still finds time to notice his fellow patients, which is fortunate when the dentist is found dead shortly after seeing Poirot. Was it murder or suicide? Poirot soon finds himself involved in the investigation.

Like a lot of us, this starts with Poirot's fear of a visit to the dentist, which turned out to be not unfounded. This is one of the books where I thought I could remember all the story, but it is somewhat more complicated than a lot of Christie's books, and found I had forgotten quite a bit of it. Not many of the characters are likable, but the banter between Poirot and Japp is pretty humourous.
