What fun - this was my first time reading this Poirot mystery, but I had seen the TV dramatization with David Suchet several times, so I knew who the murderer was; I wanted to read it with the Reading the Detectives group this time. I alternated between the Kindle book and audiobook, beautifully narrated, as always, by Hugh Fraser, who played Captain Hastings to Suchet’s Poirot For years.

Elderly, never-married, and wealthy Emily Arundell writes to Hercule Poirot when she suspects one of her relatives and/or their spouses may have attempted to murder her. By the time Poirot receives her letter, Miss Arundell is already dead - but it is believed by natural causes. However, Poirot is not convinced she was not murdered and investigates with Captain Hastings. Poirot and Hastings may be somewhat upstaged by the Arundell's fiesty fox terrier, Bob (view spoiler)

I was disappointed in this Agatha Christie mystery. It did have its good points, but I felt it was too slow and that there wasn't enough action in it. I was disappointed in the "big reveal" at the end, too. Not one of my favorite Christies.

After that last book, I needed some 'comfort food' - a reread I can rely on.
This is a fun, light, yet convoluted mystery. Poirot receives a letter from an elderly lady dated 2 months back, and come to find out, his correspondent has recently died! Is that pure coincidence? But what did the lady mean by "the incident of the dog's ball"?
Intrigued, Poirot investigates. Hastings even employs his 'little grey cells' ... or tries to! They talk to everyone imaginable ... even the dog (well, in imaginat ...more
