Knowing that Christie had accompanied her husband, Max Mallowan, to Mesopotamia and had modelled these characters after people she knew there tickled me. In fact, the character of Louise Leidner was inspired by the wife of the senior archaeologist in a dig where Mallowan was working. Christie knew here what she was writing about!

Set on an archaeological dig in Iraq, this is an interesting mystery. It is narrated by Amy Leatheran, a nurse who has gone to look after Louise, the wife of a celebrated archaeologist. She is having frightening hallucinations and has been receiving anonymous letters. But are they hallucinations? Or is someone out to get her and are there really people tapping in windows in the night? Another change to the usual, where instead of Hastings doing the narration , it is a Nurse Leatheran, who had been brought in the look after the victim. Obviously she failed, as the murder was committed in a closed room. As luck would have it, (or Christie anyway) Hercule Poirot happened to be in the vicinity and did his magic. The nurse's story I found quite humourous at times in her opinion of Poirot and the plot did keep me guessing.
