So I have this ancient paperback edition I picked up somewhere (probably one of the five Little Free Libraries in my neighborhood), published in 1934. This pleased me until I read that the book underwent substantial changes somewhere along the way, changing the title, the chapter titles, and even the motive (!). I think I read this years ago, and I know I’ve seen the dramatization with David Suchet as Poirot; this time I listened to the BBC Radio 4 audiobook while reading along.
Fun and well-done classic Poirot, but this time, he’s in the background as Sir Charles, a retired actor, Egg Lytton Gore and Mr. Sattersthwaite investigate. 2025 Series Re-read: 3.5 stars I enjoy this story and the characters but wish there was more Poirot. The "amateur sleuths" could have been checking in with him from the start, but instead he disappears for half the book. I found I had misremembered one element of the story: (view spoiler)
