What Members Thought

Nancy Oakes
There's now way I'm going to sit down and compose my thoughts at 12:40 a.m., so for now, I am so late to this party, but I finally read this book so that I can start season one of the series on Apple TV. Holy crap, that was fun, and the author kept the tension up all the way through both main storylines and did it very well. I liked it so much I just bought the next three books in the series.

Back with more soon.

3.5-4 stars - Fun ride, reminiscent of my beloved Peculiar Crimes Unit by Christopher Fowler, but darker.

I’m not sure I am really cut out for modern spy thrillers - a little too close to the dark and nasty headlines we see in the news these days! I read plent of news daily and get my fill of that. I prefer lighter reading, especially at the holidays, but I have to admit, once I became acquainted with the lonely, desperate “slow horses”, I was drawn in to this sharp, funny, gritty adventure - I

Nothing slow about this story

The first in Mick Herron’s absorbing series about MI5 agents who have messed up in some way and been sent to Slough House, a dingy establishment presided over by Jackson Lamb. Lamb is a fascinating character, apparently an unprepossessing graceless slob but with hidden depths which are revealed in the course of the story. The plot involves a young Pakistani who has been kidnapped by right wing extremists - or has he? There are many twists and surprises as the story

Slow Horses was a nice surprise — I had never heard of the series before but saw a goodreads friend give it multiple stars and a good review so I thought I would give it a go. Then I picked it up and barely put it down till I read through the whole book in two long gulps.

Slow Horses introduces the reader to Slough House, the place where in this book they put British intelligence agents out to pasture whom they cannot fire for whatever reason. It is a place where people are consigned to mindless

I don’t read a lot of spy thrillers, almost zero, in fact, but this was definitely the best I’ve read. Very high quality writing, a tight plot I could follow, and promising characters.
