I read this book a few years ago and it is one of my favourite series. This first book introduces the partnership of Bryant and May and tells the story of how they met in wartime London in 1940. I decided to try the book again on audio this time and it was a great experience. The narrator really brings the characters to life. The story swaps constantly from the 1940s to the present day but because of the great narration I didn't have any problem with working out which time each scene was set in. ...more

Intriguing mystery with unique characters. A little too much Greek mythology for me, so the story lagged at times. But the writing was too good and too witty to just scan those parts, particularly because I didn't want to miss anything vital to the plot. The shift in time between WWII London and present-day when the same detectives have aged considerably was a clever way to tell the story and get the reader to care about the two main characters.
