This is the first of the series featuring Arthur Bryant and John May, of the Peculiar Crimes Unit in London. The book begins in the present, with an explosion in the offices, and Arthur Bryant inside. The Unit opened in 1939 and, recently, May was aware that Bryant had been writing his memoirs and writing up his first case. This leads him to try to track down who was responsible for the destruction of the office, as well as coming to terms with losing his partner.

This is the first book in the series of symbiotic partners in the Peculiar Crimes Unit, Arthur Bryant and John May. I found this book of their first and "last" cases to be a complex and engrossing mystery. The relationship of the two friends and partners is well written and I look forward to reading more of their stories. The background of the first case, which begins with the formulation of the PCU, takes place in London during the Blitz, centering on the Palace Theater production of Orpheus in

I read the 2nd book in the series first & I liked it a little better but still really, really enjoyed this. Liked the details of the inner workings of an old theater, liked the setting of London during the Blitz & how that played into the story. Really liked the "getting there" almost better than the resolution to the mystery. Very glad there are more in this series.
