I am slowly rereading the Miss Marple books this year. This 3rd one barely qualifies as a Miss Marple as she doesn't make an appearance until about 80% of the way through. Of course, she quickly solves the case once she appears on the scene! It is almost as if Christie's publisher talked her into adding in a familiar sleuth rather than making it one of her stand-alone mysteries...

I rarely say this, but in this case, I like the movie—or rather, the 1985 BBC TV adaptation—better. Full review to come.

This review is for the 2023 re-read when I also listened to Richard E. Grant’s unabridged audio recording:
I listened to this as part of #ReadChristie2023 and absolutely loved it! The theme for March is spite and in this tale of poison pen letters spite drips from every page!
Christie uses her incredible writing skills to craft a compelling mystery that has you convinced that any one of a number of characters could be the guilty party, and yet when all is revealed it makes perfect sense.

I was surprised as to the number of themes that was covered in this little book. I enjoyed this story even though delightful Miss Marple only appear towards the end of the book. And also, I was so sure who did it until Miss Marple appeared at the end and explained it all.
Great book. Not my favourite but still, enjoyable.

Agatha Christie fooled me again! I loved this book so much. It had everything, a story about a man moving to a small town with his sister. He is recovering from a flying accident and his doctor recommended rest. Instead, he found a town seething with secrets and eventually murder. There are two romances I didn't see coming (well, one I did.)
The best part I wasn't expecting was Miss Marple coming in at the end to help solve the crime. And the resolution was exceptional. I thought for once I'd sol ...more

Someone is sending anonymous accusatory letters to people all over town. After receiving one of the nasty letters a woman takes her own life. The police can't solve the case so the vicar's wife decides to call in an expert, Miss Marple, to save the day.
The twists and turns with this story are quite ingenious and keeps the reader guessing. Fun read. ...more
