Jerry Burton and his sister Joanna lease a house in the country to enable him to recover from serious injuries. He has been ordered to lead a quiet life with no upsets. At first life in the village seems idyllic - the locals are friendly and call on the newcomers welcoming them into their circle. Then Jerry receives an anonymous letter which suggests that his sister is not really his sister at all but enjoys a closer relationship to him. It is only when he hears that others have had anonymous le ...more

I rarely say this, but in this case, I like the movie—or rather, the 1985 BBC TV adaptation—better. Full review to come.

Agatha Christie fooled me again! I loved this book so much. It had everything, a story about a man moving to a small town with his sister. He is recovering from a flying accident and his doctor recommended rest. Instead, he found a town seething with secrets and eventually murder. Someone is sending anonymous accusatory letters to people all over town. After receiving one of the nasty letters a woman takes her own life. The police can't solve the case so the vicar's wife decides to call in an expert, Miss Marple, to save the day.

The twists and turns with this story are quite ingenious and keeps the reader guessing. Fun read.

This book is a must-read to understand how crazy the mind of a murderer works. An important thing in the story which was the letters sent to everyone is something which sheds light on how people gossip about others even today.

A good mystery. Poison pen letters, a murder and quite an array of characters, Miss Marple having only a cameo role.
