The Poldark series have always been one of my favourites. Although in this book I found the relationship between Ross and Demelza has been a little bit awkward and lame since Hugh Armitage’s unfortunate death. I do not think Ross really has the right to ever be crossed with Demelza if she can tolerate and swallow the humiliation Ross brings to her with his never decaying passion towards Elizabeth. I won’t call her affair with Hugh is out of pure retaliation, quite on the contrary she Five stars.

We all know what is the most heartbreaking scene in this book. Yes, Elizabeth’s death. I found it hard to believe and I kept reading those lines that Ross breaks into Trenwith asks about her and then George answers in so much pain that she’s dead. I never liked Elizabeth as a character, but after all these books I have started developing a strong feeling to her, I love how she tried to get herself together to keep Trenwith and her family. How she silently endured when George got suspicious and became icy cold to her. How she was willing to gamble her life trusting some unqualified doctor, and swallow the bitter medicine just to reassure George, in order to save their marriage. She’s strong as a widow, a mother, I hate that she could never have the chance to speak frankly to Ross, which is, I dare say, her sole true love. I hate that her two marriages sank into the swamp of unhappiness. I hate that she died this way. The scene is hard to accept if one imagines the scene in head, it’s cruel. How can she decay before dead, how can her beautiful slim arm swollen. How can she smell! I really hate to portray the scene but I cannot help it. George’s heart must have been torn into thousands of pieces, watching his great love dies like this. Everything just started getting better...their marriage, George’s knighthood, Ursula’s birth. And she’s dead. Somehow in this scene I sensed reconciliation between Ross and George, for they lost the woman they both so deeply in love with. All these conflicts, schemes, defamations, fight backs, suddenly all the meaning just evaporated with Elizabeth’s demise. Even Trenwith, the ancient Poldark house wept silently for her.
