With news of women who had been kidnap and held captive for years escaping with their children who had been born during captivity, Emma Donoghue wrote the novel Room. The reader is first introduced to the claustrophobic world of Ma and Jack in their tiny room when Jack turns five. We see that like all five year olds it is a big day for Jack.

This was a fairly interesting read. Reading this book definitely brings to mind the Jaycee Dugard case. The narrator of the novel is a five year old boy, Jack, who is born as a result of the rape and kidnapping of his mother by a man Jack calls "Old Nick". Jack only knows his prison, which he calls "room" and never leaves it for the first five years of his life. The first half of the novel takes place in "room" and the rest of the novel is about when Jack and his mother are freed after the mothe

Jack is turning five when he wakes up in Room - the only world he knows, where he spends the days with Ma - days she's filled with activities. In the night he sleeps inside Wardrobe, out of sight of the nightly visitor he's dubbed Old Nick. This is a wonderful perspective, that of a charming and well-loved 5-year-old. Despite the disturbing setting, a tiny room where a woman and her young son are imprisoned, he finds life idyllic. It shouldn't be so surprising, but it is. As a parent, it was striking to recall how happy a child is to have a parent's complete attention, no matter what the situation, and to remember the joy that can be had in tiny things...

Jack lives in Room with his mother. Jack and Ma are the only real things he knows aside from Old Nick whom Jack has to hide from in the wardrobe. After Jack's fifth birthday things begin to change in his world. I had some idea what the book was about since it's been out for 5 years now but I won't give more away here. I was worried with the subject matter the book would be really depressing but it isn't. The fact that Jack narrates the story helps and gives the book a unique perspective. I tore

I think by now most everyone has a good idea of the basic storyline - A young woman and her son are held prisoner in a small shed by a psycho. The child, Jack, was born in the room and for him, it is the only world he has ever know. A television has been provided and he believes that all he sees is the truth and the way things are. When a rescue finally happens, it is hard on Jack to put these beliefs away and come to terms with the real world. And his young mother has her own issues with dealin

Room By Emma Donoghue

This is one of the books I decided to get now from the library and not wait 2 to 5 years on my TBR. I am glad that I decided to. I can't give away much of the premise, but it was a quick read that I could not put down. This is a true story of survival and what we as humans can endure. It questions our thoughts on nature vs. nurture as well as our perception of the world we live in. Emma created a unique vision with this novel. It may be a story we've seen before or on ...more
