The single best fantasy novel there is. It's the start of a truly epic series with a great ensemble cast. It also does a great job of being very adult, very dark, and relentless in who the author is willing to sacrifice to make a great story. This was the first book by George R. R. Martin that I've read and I'll read anything by him now.

I'm currently reading it.
It's unlike any other fantasy novel I've ever read, because the focus is more on the court intrigues and politics than in magic and what-not, but it's a captivating book so far. You just know after reading the first few chapters that you wouldn't find happy endings in this novel - and perhaps even the entire series - but this sad fact won't stop you from continuing with it. In fact, it makes you go through the pages even faster.

My first introduction to George RR Martin, i am hooked. So much depth and scope. It becomes hard to put the book down.
This book makes you want to roll up your sleeves and delve into the depth of it. The characters are rich and the plot unfolds slowly and swallows you whole .A rare gem out there in a sea of books.
A friend of mine turned me onto this series. A fantastical historical fiction style.
