There's something about a wedding that I just adore. Although it's not Holly's wedding, she's the church's volunteer wedding coordinator and a big Thanksgiving wedding brings her high school sweetheart back to town.

My exposure to the Year of Weddings collection (published by Zondervan, a house under the HarperCollins umbrella) has been limited. I have one of the paperback collections on my shelf and read one other thanks to a blog tour. When I learned rom-com author extraordinaire Becky Wade was contributing a novella to this year’s line up, I knew, without question it’d be a must read. When I learned rom-com author extraordinaire Becky Wade was contributing a novella to this year’s line up, I knew, without question it’d be a must read. Texas as the home base might set the stage for most of her novels, but this one is “fresh.” It steps away from her beloved, rooted-in-Texas Porter clan to introduce readers to an entirely new set of characters. Lest you be worried this doesn’t live up to the quirky albeit loveable family, I’d like to convince you otherwise.

Josh and Holly are the hero and heroine of our all-too-short story. Josh is the hometown boy who returns in advance of his best friend’s wedding to a Martinsburg heiress. While there, Josh is faced with seeing, and in some small sense, working with his ex, Holly. In high school and part of his early college life, Holly was the only girl he had eyes for. She was the woman he wanted to marry… until she broke his heart by breaking it off with him. After she ended things, neither one of them moved on. Now that Josh is back, their feelings seem to still have a spark… but is that enough for a second chance?

As with any novella, pacing and timing seems to be key factors to making anything work and be a smooth experience for the reader. Becky manages this flawlessly. There is already a clear established relationship between the couple, which goes a long way in lending authenticity to the eventual ending. Speaking of those characters, I adored Josh and Holly. Most of our time is spent seeing things through Holly’s eyes (in that we’re mostly inside her point-of-view), but on the rare occasion we are among Josh’s thoughts. I found myself loving his character. He’s one of those guys who loved deeply, and right or wrong, he carried that around for eight years, only to have it resurface when he was again faced with the past. In other words, he’s one of the good guys. Holly, likewise, has a unique story; her backstory is one I’ve not seen before and her struggle to accept a second chance isn’t difficult to understand. Also a fun though rare appearance character is Holly’s best friend, Sam.

Sweetly imagined and poignant in unexpected places, Love in the Details is a next-to-perfect novella. If short stories are your guilty pleasure, then picking up a copy of this is a must. It’s inspirational, it’ll tug at your heart strings, and best of all, it’s romantic. One of my favorite things about the novel was Josh’s current status (much as I’d like to explain this, I won’t given the need to hold back on spoilers). Don’t miss reading this delightful charmer. It’s a detail you won’t wish to overlook adding to any of your fall reading lists.

I wanted something I could read quickly and got this in audiobook form through my local library on the Hoopla app. This is a contemporary second-chance-at-love story. I love when couples are brought together and get another chance, especially when the thing that broke them up was kind of out of their control.

Love in the Details is a sweet "second chance at first love" novella that features characters not connected to Wade's other novels. Holly and Josh are both incredibly likable characters, and, in a departure from Wade's most recent heroes, Josh is fairly undamaged and really borders on perfection. Normally, I don't like "too perfect" heroes, but in this case, with this short novella-length time to get to know Josh, it works.

I am a huge fan of Becky Wade, I've read and loved all of her books to date. So I've been super excited to read this nevella for over a year, ever since I first heard that it was happening (Even though at that time I had no idea what it was even about yet, I knew I wanted to read it!)
