Atwood really knows how to build some feminist tension, this is a definite page turner. The Aunt Lydia narrative parts were my favorite and I wouldn’t have minded if the whole book was from her perspective. A little more hopeful than Handmaid’s Tale.
There is a tone shift from the first book to this one. It feels like this was written for the TV show watchers not necessarily for the readers.

This was such a letdown after the Handmaid's Tale. I wonder just how much the author wanted to write this simply to piggyback on the television show. It felt forced throughout the entire book, especially in the rising action. This book also isn't necessary as its predecessor is sufficient on its own. Still, the book breezes by. What it most lacks is the grim tone held throughout the first book. For whatever reason, the author chose a more optimistic tone. Oh well, mastery isn't easily replicated
