I wish this didn't have so much pulling me between higher & lower ratings, but since it does, it gets a middle of the road one.
Pros: world building, nicely deployed ghosts and spirits and villains and humans, author narrated audiobook well
Cons: info dumping, slow pacing, protagonist without a ton of agency
When there's a mystery involved, even if that's not the driving force of the book (but maybe this book was trying to be too many things - mystery, ghost tale, romance, historical), I want to b ...more

3.5 - An historical fantasy with an intriguing premise, The Ghost Bride entices the reader first into nineteenth-century Malacca, and then further into a world of spirits and intrigue. The mystery itself was, admittedly, rather obvious, but the getting there was fun, and the romance subplot took unexpected but satisfying turns. The plot needed some tightening – there were a few threads that never went anywhere – but overall, it was an enjoyable read.
