This is a good read and I like it more than most I have read in the genre of New Weird. However, it is not a complete story. Many questions are raised and there are no answers to be had in this volume. I think my final opinion of this book will depend on the rest of the trilogy.

A beautifully painted world full of eerie idiosyncrasies and mindwarping images that stuck with me after I closed the book. The mood is ominous, disturbing, and unique. I can't wait to read the next two. ...more

I feel that the writing style of this novel has worked its way under my skin and into my psyche, in a smart parallel to the content of the story. There's not much to be said directly about the plot or characters. It is something that isn't really explainable, which I kind of love. Some readers are driven crazy by a lack of resolution, but that happens to be a favorite thing of mine. And so I found myself completely okay with the intense ambiguity of everything in this book. Such a frustrating book to read. I forced myself to finish it because I was on vacation pretty far from the nearest internet connection or book store and because it was so short, but I did not enjoy this book at all. Annihilation is written in a very vague manner, you are never given the names of the characters, you are never told the details about how the world ended up in the state that it is in, and it is written this way on purpose.
