How do you untangle from the thing that defines you?

Often I'm bemused by the recent phrase "enslaved person." This phrase comes about as a rejection of the word "slave," the nomenclature for someone enslaved during the 19th century in America. Enslaved person speaks to what was done, slave speaks to who the person was.
