What Members Thought

Jesmyn Ward knows how to do two things: write beautifully and expose difficult stories. This wasn't a book I particularly "enjoyed," but the experience of reading helped me grow as a reader. If it wasn't for the Diverse Books Club, I'm not sure I would have finished this read at all. But hey, that's why I love the DBC so much-it challenges me to read titles I normally wouldn't even gravitate toward. I did enjoy this one more than Salvage the Bones (the magical realism kind of wrecked me).

There isn't any doubt that Jesmyn Ward is a phenomenal writer with a powerful, important perspective. I enjoyed this book but it was very dark and at times difficult to read. I think it might have been the right book for the right time for me.
