This is a good book, but it's hard to read. I'm just having problems recently with reading too much about children in traumatic situations and this is a Lot of that.

The characters are all good. Ana is compelling and well-written and all of the other characters are similarly, like, they feel good in their limited place in the story and also they're all comprehensible and feel like they have more depth than just what we see.

I was 10 when the war in Serbia and Croatia broke out. I remember the news stories but couldn't understand. The strength in this novel came from the character being the same age as me during that time and seeing the experience through a child's eyes. Trying to grasp the entirety of the conflict would have made the novel stiff. Instead the characters were vivid and setting real instead of a place that you've only seen war-torn photos of.
