BUT WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO FEEL?? Hope? Sorrow? There are a lot of good things about this book. The language choices are good, it travels back and forth in its time line very effectively, the characters are interesting, and I loved the title tie in a lot. After seeing so much praise and enthusiasm for this book on bookstagram and booktube, I was worried it wouldn't live up to the hype.
Alas: it was even better than I expected.
What a rare work. Quietly haunting imagery, a compelling plot, lyrical writing that is consistently beautiful but never verges on being florid or "purple." This is what I believe to be one of the more accurate apocalypse books out there. I think if a pandemic sweeps the globe, it's not going to be a bunch of action hero's roaming around fighting people. It's going to be months of boredom with people stuck in an airport with nowhere to go.
I wasn't quite sure about the whole comic book subplot and I wish it spent more time in the After the pandemic vs before but overall I enjoyed the book. ...more

I was mesmerized pretty much from the first chapter, and at times the post-plague world is described so convincingly that I looked around at all of the gadgets around me running on electricity (including my kindle) with a bit of amazement. I agree with the Traveling Symphony that mere "survival is insufficient," though I also heartily agree with the clarinet that Shakespeare is not the writer that I would want with me at such a time.
