Reads like a love letter to humanity. No other post apocalyptic story has captivated me like this one. The deftly interwoven stories and flipping back and forth in time reminded me of Jennifer Egan's A Visit From the Goon Squad, which I also enjoyed.

I am normally not a fan of dystopian tales, but this one just grabbed me and didn’t let go. Maybe because the setting switches from current times to a believable not too distant future, maybe because it is character driven and full of insights about our human condition, maybe because it focuses on the need for the arts even during the apocalypse (survival is insufficient) or maybe because it’s simply good storytelling... but I loved this book and want to talk about it.

Multiple POVs in different locations and times, constantly flitting back and forth with nothing happening in a single storyline. Stories kept being hinted at and then being cut off before anything ever happened. It was so frustrating and painful. The entire book felt like a neverending introduction. Such a letdown for an interesting premise.

I am not usually drawn to post-apocalyptic fiction. I've heard so many rave reviews about this that I had put it on my TBR and then took it off and then on again. I finally figured I better convince my book club to read it so that I would as well. I understand the great reviews because the writing was spectacular and very thought provoking. I think I'll be circling back to this book in my thoughts for some time.

This book took me a little bit of time to get into, but after a while I just couldn't put it down! By the end, I had mentally filed it under "favorites " in my head. It was unique and the world building was fantastic. The characters are all really interesting as well.
