Reads like a love letter to humanity. No other post apocalyptic story has captivated me like this one. The deftly interwoven stories and flipping back and forth in time reminded me of Jennifer Egan's A Visit From the Goon Squad, which I also enjoyed.

I am normally not a fan of dystopian tales, but this one just grabbed me and didn’t let go. Maybe because the setting switches from current times to a believable not too distant future, maybe because it is character driven and full of insights about our human condition, maybe because it focuses on the need for the arts even during the apocalypse (survival is insufficient) or maybe because it’s simply good storytelling... but I loved this book and want to talk about it.

I think I’ve read too many post-apocalyptic novels, but this was a pretty good example of the type. Some survivors are expectedly barbaric; others thankfully strive to retain their humanity. Stories kept being hinted at and then being cut off before anything ever happened. It was so frustrating and painful. The entire book felt like a neverending introduction. Such a letdown for an interesting premise.

I went into this book knowing nothing about it. It started a little slow, but then took a strong right turn into post-apocalyptic/dystopian territory. Fantastic! I was gripped by this book from that point until the end.

This book took me a little bit of time to get into, but after a while I just couldn't put it down! By the end, I had mentally filed it under "favorites " in my head. It was unique and the world building was fantastic. The characters are all really interesting as well.
