What Members Thought

Thought this book was superbly written but conventional when it comes to the post apocalyptic genre. I wish it took more risks in the writing or the narrative and I'm surprised that it was a National Book Award finalist. I did love the Shakespeare woven into the narrative but, and I might be an idiot, I didn't find a lot of resonance of King Lear in the actual story so it seemed there just for flavor.

I should give this book three stars but it has something more that I can't explain that bumps it up. It is not the first dystopian novel, and it isn't entirely original, but it is a fresh approach, and I liked the character development.
