Very gripping, lovely writing, a great (horrible and imaginably possible) premise well realized, but I wanted more resolution! (And a companion "Station Eleven" graphic novel!)

Definitively in the Top Books of 2014
I had the fun of listening to this engrossing, fun, intriguing novel with my family, which meant long discursive chats full of speculation and excitement and "I bet that guy is this guy!" and "but what happened to M???" and "hang on, look at this map, they've walked so far" whenever our road trip required us to stop and, you know, enjoy the sights instead of listening to our book.

I think I’ve read too many post-apocalyptic novels, but this was a pretty good example of the type. Some survivors are expectedly barbaric; others thankfully strive to retain their humanity. I felt the author tried to make deep symbolic points a few too many times that I’m afraid passed me by. Not all of the characters lived for me. On top of this, I only really got attached to a couple of characters, and even so I didn't care a whole lot what happened to them. The writing was fine, and I gave this three stars because hone ...more

I was apprehensive about starting this one, because I have not been in the right frame of mind for dystopia and bleakness. But I'm so glad I read this. While it is about a terrible flu that wipes out human civilization - so, dark - it also maintains an undercurrent of hope. (Because screw you, "The Road", I believe in hope!) It's also beautifully written, with compelling characters, and a wonderful narrative that moves back and forth in time. Highly recommend.
