Timeless and memorable. It is incredible how Hinton, a mere teenager herself when she wrote this, perfectly captures the voice of Ponyboy and creates such distinct personalities for each of the greasers. The story is fairly simple on the surface, but subtly delves into weighty topics such as identity within an established society and the dangers of stereotypes through Ponyboy's various experiences. It took me far too long to discover the wonders of this book!

I have a big love for short, tightly written novels. I don't think you can get much shorter than The Outsiders without being a novella, and the shortness works to its advantage because more scenes of rumbling and identity confusion would not add anything. I think this is an example of a novel that influenced so much writing it doesn't look special fifty years on, but I can see why it would make a big splash when it first arrived. After recently reading a similar book in The Catcher in the Rye, I found this one to be much more enjoyable. True while the characters could be considered a bunch of guys who could be consider to be nar-do wells, they do have a degree of humanity in them; even those that are off better than the main characters are much more like humans than in J.D. Salinger's book. Ms. Hinton seems to get the human psyche of a teenager and they don't seem to be consumed by what others think.

I never read this before, but one of my classes is about to start it, so I figured I better know what they were going to be asking me questions about. I was pleasantly suprised by it and I'm hoping my class will like it too,.
