I wanted to finish this before I saw the movie, and I'm glad that I did - I'll be interested to see how it compares.
There is a lot of YEAH SCIENCE in this book, which is cool, but it gets a little dense at times. there were definitely times I was skimming sections to get the broad idea - I don't need to know all the exact measurements all the time. ...more

Science fiction heavy on the science. The Martian starts with astronaut Mark Watney left for dead on Mars. Weir's handling of the science was impressive to say the least. In a story that has a human on Mars having to solve problem after problem to keep alive for hundreds of sols (Martian days), the most unbelievable part was how cooperative NASA was with the media.

I read this from cover to cover in two sittings over about 6 hours. I never wanted to put it down. It is so compelling and intense yet fun and witty at the same time. It feels very grounded and real as well. It doesn't feel like science fiction at all, it wouldn't be much of a stretch for it to be a non-fiction account of an astronaut surviving on Mars.
