Hard to say whether the audio is better than the print version. The emotional impact is much more powerful when read by a skilled narrator, but the calculations and talk-through of procedures was a bit tedious, and no way to skim as one can with print.

Hmm. I liked it, but--at the risk of maybe being disappointed by something this novel wasn't supposed to be-- the overall tone was far too cavalier and jokey. I liked the jokes! But even when people were swearing and throwing up their hands in frustration, it still felt like a foregone conclusion that things would probably work out by the end. Despite all the Bad Situations that occur, nothing ever really felt that tense. The main character's tendency to explain some of the science behind his ac

In general I think this book is overrated. I know that's an unpopular opinion, so I'll do my best to explain my thoughts on it. I loved the big themes of humanity and I found it action packed. I'm as far from a scientist as one can can be, but all the science and math seemed very technically accurate not like I would really be able to point out any errors.
It was easy to get bogged down in the science, but it only bothered me a little. The one-dimensional nature of the characters bothered me the ...more

I listened to this as an audiobook. The story is very creative and interesting but the narrative was a bit technical at times and the humor a little corny. It did make me chuckle, and while the use of profanity was appropriate I was a little discouraged by the very first word being the f word!
It's basically a Robinson Crusoe or Cast Away story set on Mars. The narrator is left behind and has to McGuyver his way into surviving with what food, equipment, water, etc. he has available. Half the book ...more

What a wonderfully pleasant surprise this book was! For some reason I thought it would be a dark, serious, man stuck on mars story, but instead I found a humorous, slightly educational (I say slightly because all the science stuff completely went over my head), and entertaining book. It was impressive to see how Mark adapted to his rather unique circumstances and managed to put his scientific background to good use.

2015 Reading Challenge: A book set in the future.
I don't think we know when the book is set, but since as of 2015 we haven't sent any manned mission to Mars, it must be the future.
It's a page turner but I have to say a lot of a science and technical stuff went way over my head, and I'm not the biggest fan of the main character. But still, a fun read. ...more

I loved it! A quick read. I had quite the roller-coaster emotions while reading it..."He's going to make it...oh crap, that thing broke and now he's dead...no he's ok....no, dying...." Great!
