I stayed up way too late reading this, I got absorbed in the tilt-a-whirl of problems and wacky solutions, and I enjoyed that Weir explored so many different angles to do with the astronaut's dilemma and reactions back home.
My little negative: it's so much a book of the brain and of adrenaline that there's not a ton of basic human emotion happening. People who spend months in isolation generally get pretty introspective, and Astronaut Mark seemed to buzz along on the surface of his emotions. I'd ...more

Tense and exhilarating, this book is an enjoyable ride and quickly engrossed me. The simplicity of the story's focus on one man grappling with survival on Mars without any unnecessary personal factors or subplots is refreshing; the problems that Watney runs into alone provide plenty of drama. Weir nicely ties in existing elements of space travel and Mars exploration to keep the action rooted in reality. Watney's unflappable nature results in the story feeling lighter and less dire than expected,

Super entertaining! Like the movie Gravity but on Mars. If I'm honest I will admit I skimmed over some of the math and physics... but the story was great.

I liked this book a lot. There were some parts that went over my head but I tried not to let that stop me. I'm glad I stuck with it.
