There are passages of true brilliance in this book. There is a gripping narrative in this book. Unfortunately, there is a lot of indulgent and overblown blather in this book as well. There were chapters that fascinated me, but I mostly felt adrift and detached while reading it. The moments that shone involved quiet intimacy between shipmates or philosophical musings about human nature. The book felt endless though, and I kept mentally chanting, "C'mon, Moby Dick, come on!" I only stuck with it because of a book club.
