The Handmaid's Tale has received a ton of publicity recently with the production of the HULU series of the same title. I've not seen the series, so I cannot speak to it nor am I biased by it. This is solely a review of the book from the '80s by Atwood.

Compared with other dystopian novels popular today, The Handmaid’s Tale is set within a period of time shortly after the events that changed the world. Offred remembers her life before she became a Handmaid, now forced to dress a certain way, act a certain way, forbidden to read and write, and have sex with a married man every month since his wife cannot have children. This book left me with a lump in my throat. I feel this physical need to know what happened to Offred. As I went through this book, I noticed that my body reacted to it. I was uncomfortable, as well as too knowing of the situations described. My body felt the shame, awkwardness, desire, love, and confusion that Offred's did. I guess that is what makes this book so powerful. It takes real life feelings and places them in this world, which at first seems so foreign, but is it really? It frustrated

I felt like the author wasn't sure what she wanted her tone to be. We get all this information on the time before, times she remembers but there is no feeling attached to it. Seven chapters in and I had no connection to the character so I quit.
